Go out smelling like a rose.

Portland designer, father and DJ Matthew Vu applies his “Stop and Smell the Roses” treatment to our heavy canvas work coat. With a nod towards appreciating and protecting the world around us, it’s made in Portugal from 100% plants. It’s tough on the outside with reinforced elbow patches and pockets, and soft and inviting on the inside with a soft cotton lining.

The Innovation

Our buttons are made out of Corozo nuts instead of plastic. And, don’t worry – seeds that are picked before they fall aren’t ripe enough for button production, so there’s no deforestation business around here.

Our jacket liner is made from wood. Wait, wood? That’s right, or to be more specific, Tencel which is sustainably harvested from managed forests in Europe. And of course because it’s made from wood, it is biodegradable.

Every bit of this jacket, from fabric, buttons, labels, and sewing thread, is made from plants and will decompose naturally at the end of its useful life.
Our collab graphics are printed with a waste reducing direct-to-garment method using plastisol-free water-born inks.

Matt Vu

Matt, a designer, dad and DJ, spent his childhood surrounded by the creative influences of North East Portland and his designs often stem from those personal experiences. Currently working for The North Face, his decade long career also includes stints at Jordan and Nike ACG.

Thoughtfully created to be readable by both viewer and wearer, Matt’s Smell The Roses Tee is inspired by this City of Roses we call home. What better message than to stop and smell them? Like UNLESS, he’s passionate about making recyclability a pillar of existence.

Portland Story

Inspired by our hometown and its people, this collection harnesses the self-expression, inclusivity and creativity of Portland. Curated by Franke Cooke, each collaborator designed a limited edition UNLESS product representing parts of themselves and how they’re influenced by the city they live in.
